When you're couped up in an undersized apartment for two active kids, living in the City can feel more like a curse than a gift. When the weather turns cold or rainy, newyorkers know the answer is to take advantage of one of the many large public spaces in New York. They may not all be free, but some of the City's museums are the perfect answer to children climbing the walls. The Children's Museum of New York is no exception. Although the spaces are small that some other museums, the exibits are appropriate to children younger than seven than many other museums. Children from ages 1 to 6 will enjoy exploring the Children's Museum four floors filled with age appropriate exibits. Many of the exibits allow children to expend some of their extra energy through physical activities including sliding, lifting and running. Others allow children to exersize their imaginations through play in toy kitchen's and bedrooms. There are art activities and story times throughout the day, so be sure to check with the desk when you arrive.
Parents can enjoy the museum thanks to the ease at which to keep tabs on children in the open spaces, the stroller and coat checks, and the clean and safe environment. Sometimes older siblings can overwhelm the small space and make parents of younger children nervous for their children's safety. For the most part, the Museum is best suited for children aged 2 to 5. Parents with older children should make sure not to allow their children to dominate the small space. The space is best shortly after openning. On rainy weekends, the space can become overwhelming. If you live in the city, membership is a sensible option and kids can return time and again without loosing interest in the space. After a fun filled morning or afternoon, head over to Homer's for a tummy full of fried food. |

Dark Knight may be breaking box office records, but there is a much better and more deserving film of your money and attention. “Ne le dis à personne”, or “Tell No One” is a blockbuster of the independent kind. Based on the book, by Harlan Coben, of the same title, this film stays true to the original story. This exciting French film keeps you on the edge of your seat. Not since “La Femme Nikita” have I been as excited by a foreign action film. The action isn't of the Hollywood type, but there are a number of great chase scenes, good suspense, and great acting that make “Tell No One” the hands-down pick of the summer. If you like film's like “The Fugitive”, you will enjoy this film. In fact, the twists are somewhat reminiscent on “The Fugitive”, though the twists don't reveal themselves in the same way as they do in “The Fugitive”. “Tell No One” is one of the best action suspenseful films in years. As you'd expect, you find yourself rooting for the main character, Alex Beck, played by François Cluzet. Cluzet, a veteran French actor, plays the part perfectly. Cluzet, plays the role much more skillfully than Harrison Ford plays Dr. Kimble in “The Fugitive.” This is a must see, and is not a rental. This is something you need to get into a theater seat this summer to enjoy. |

Sara Beth's has one of the best Sunday brunches in the city. No reservations are taken, and like popover's, people don't think twice about waiting over an hour to eat there. The restaurant is the perfect country like setting in the noisy city. It is decorated with just the right colors and the moldings feel Victorian. The food is excellent. I've had most everything, but I still come back time and again for the Goldie Lox (eggs, cream cheese, and lox). Great coffee and pastries await you too, but the overrated jam isn't all its cracked up to be. What happened to making just plain strawberry jam, anyway. I will admit that I've never eaten a meal other than Breakfast at Sarabeth's. I know that they have a lunch and dinner menu, but why on earth would you eat at Sarabeth's for dinner in New York? There are so many fantastic American choices, and it just doesn't strike me as a place for anything other than brunch or tea. |

If you're unfortunate enough to be in the midtown east for any reason, you must stop into Grand Central for a bite to eat. Forget Michael Jordan's and the Oyster Bar. The unexpected gem is actually Pep Rosso's on the lower level. For less than $15 dollars, you can have a fantastic lunch or dinner with a drink in one of the greatest setting ever. Sit at the marble bar and order a pasta and a Peroni. The food is excellent, the service is quick, and the atmosphere is amazing. Every time I eat at that counter, I feel transported back to an earlier time. I've had the fusilli putanesca and the penne alla vodka many times. It has always been piping hot and delicious. Fresh bread, olive oil and parmesan wait you on the counter. Beware, however; at lunch the place gets really busy. There are many other places to sit on the lower level, but frankly, there is nothing like sitting at that counter. Magnificent, pure New York! |

NoFX is one of the best punk bands ever. If you ever listened to California punk - Bands like the Descendents, OpIvy, Voodoo Glow Skulls - you'll very likely already know and love NoFX. They have a little lighter sound than other punk bands, but I think there message is just as relavent. NoFX is like the punchy comedian that gets his point across with jokes. Songs like "Don't Call me White" and "You're Wrong" may sound like mockery, but they make you think. The music itself is like seaglass. It's a bit broken, but it won't cut you. It's the kind of music you'd want to dig in the sand for all day just to add to your collection.
Luckily, NoFX's logevity as a band and as people has not stopped them from writing new music and performing live. They will be performing at Irving Plaza in October for two shows. If you can't get a ticket, you may be interested in catching their realimentary on FUSE. The show follows the band around the world and catches the trials of a touring/aging punk rock band. Although there are a few musical moments, it is more interesting to watch how the semi-matured members approach the tour. Frankly, watching NoFX is one of the more entertaining things on TV these days. Note: Both Irving Plaza Shows are SOLD OUT Might be time to take a trip to the dreaded Jersey or LI. |
